Bibliography
In
9 years of literary work, Nick Perumov has created a total of 19
books, the overall circulation of which is hard to count.
However, it is known that circulation for May 1999 - April 2000
was estimated at 434,400 copies, and for May 2000 - April 2001 -
520,700 copies. That's over 1 million copies for the period
beginning with May 1999, which is a record for the books in
fantasy genre in Russia. 4 more books were published by Perumov
under an assumed name, which the author adamantly refuses to
reveal.
THe Ring of Darkness:
The Elven Blade
Having written the last lines of "The Lord of the Rings",
J.R.R.Tolkien has closed the door to the world of elves, dwarves,
goblins, hobbits and men which he has created, and threw away
the magical key to it. And only one author, Nick Perumov, was
able to find the missing link to the mysterious and fragile
world of the Middle-Earth. The job proved to be difficult as
with each step the road kept getting steeper, each incorrect
word could have ruined the magic of Tolkien. But talent has
prevailed. J.R.R.T.'s world has come alive, has changed, has
aquired new voice and depth and...has transformed into Perumov's
world. And what Perumov thought of as a loose continuation of
"The Lord of the Rings" has transformed into the vivid,
magnificent epic trilogy, one of the most recognizable in the
Russian and world science fiction genre.
Three hundred years have passed since the War of the Rings. The
Dark Lord's fortress lies in ruins, peace and prosperty has not
left the free lands of Middle-Earth. The last remnants of
wizards and mighty kings have grown weak from abundness of
luxury and turn a deaf ear to the powerful omens prophesizing
great evil. Suspicious wanderers have been seen in the inns of
Shire and in Folko the Hobbit's hands glows with an uneasy blue
fire THE ELVEN BLADE.
The Black Lance
Three warriors have roamed the rain-soaked roads of the
Middle-Earth. Their goal is both close and elusive. For they are
chasing after Olmer, the King-without-Kingdom, the last lord of
the Ring of Darkness. War rages around them and only miracle
could save the protectors of light from the one who wrought the
deadly BLACK LANCE.
The Adamant of Khennah
The epic trilogy "The Ring of Darkness" of the famous
Petersburger and science fiction writer Nick Perumov has become
so beloved by the true fans of heroic fantasy, that we have
decided to once again publish this magnificent saga. Even more
so, because Nick Perumov has finished the adventures of Folko
Brandybuck and his dwarven comrades with a third volume entitled
"The Adamant of Khennah". Now "The Ring of
Darkness" has become a trilogy. The grandiose chronicle of
the Middle-Earth is before you...
Three years of peaceful life have been given to Folko and his
companions after the victory at Grey Havens. Many glorious a
deed have been done by them in those years, but suddenly, the
horns of war are blowing once more. The cities are buring and
the land is desolate again. So begins the last war of the Third
Age, a war that is more dreadful than anything seen under the
ancient skies of the Middle-Earth. And victory in this war will
only be granted to he, who holds the magical stone that opens
the doors between the worlds, THE ADAMANT OF KHENNAH.
The Sky of Valinor
The book was planned as the 4th volume of "The Ring of
Darkness". It was published in it's edited version as the
second part of "The Adamant of Khennah". The ending of
it is the same as in the "Adamant"
Right now the manuscript looks like this: several chapter plans,
plus a couple of episodes. Nick Perumov is not going to finish
writing it or publish it unedited.
Waterfall
After our heroes have gone to Hierward, their history is not
over. Such company, either together, or even if they split up,
would definitely have new adventures before them. They had the
adamant of Khenna, a powerful artifact that opened the paths
between the worlds. So, before our heroes opens the Waterfall of
the Worlds, where anyone can find a place and adventures.
Nick has written several episodes, but after a vote on the
website among his fans, he decided to instead finish writing
"A Thousand Years of Hroft". And so, "Waterfall"
would never be written.
Chronicles of Hierward
The Twilight of the Gods
The Book of Hagen
On the green hills of the mysterious continent called Hierward,
a land of peaceful and quiet life of elves, dwarves and men,
appeared the Mage and his Apprentice. They are the ones who have
challenged the dark gods of Hierward. And so begins the time
when carnivorous stars fall from the skies, the fallen Lord of
Darkness opens his eyes, and other terrible omens harken THE
TWILIGHT OF THE GODS...
Warrior of the Great Darkness
The Book of Aryata and Trogwar
This books tells us of the times when armies of Gods and Mages
have clashed on the unfathomable heights, when terrible
creatures have arisen from volcanic magma and on the dusty roads
of the ancient continent of Hierward walked the prince without a
throne, the last hope of the people - THE WARRIOR OF THE GREAT
DARKNESS...
The Land Without Joy
The Book of Eltara and Argnist
The cold sun has always risen above the mountains and fallen
into the sea, illuminating the silent continent called Hierward.
Gods have forsaken this land and the time seemed to have stopped
running. It has come to be that men now decide the fate of this
world. Those who have lived through the Twilight of the Gods now
have lost their memory and become cruel. New hope was born in
the hearts of the chosen, but the formerly plentiful Hierward is
now called THE LAND WITHOUT JOY.
A Thousand Years of Hroft
A novel that tells us the story of the first meeting of Hroft
and the young Hedin. It is told from the point of view of Hroft
with later commentary from Hedin. Book is currently being
written \ Nick Perumov
I promised to write it and so I shall \ Nick Perumov, October
2002.
I'll write the book that won in the polls, "A Thousand
Years of Hroft" that is, but it is more, how shall I put it,
a fanfic. This novel would only interest the truest of my fans
who would like to know the details. It has quite an
unconventional outlook on some of the things I've said in the
"Twilight of the Gods" \ Nick Perumov, November 2001.
Well, the thing is, when I was writing about Hierward, well,
since there was this kind of Nordic feel to it, well, yes, there
were the Aesir and the Vanir, and Loki and Baldur, and Frik, all
of them... Yes, there were the Aesir and the Vanir. So there was
this sort of alternative prophesy and an alternative Ragnarok.
Ragnaradi did not, in fact, happen as it was supposed to, and so
it came to the Battle of the Borgild Field and the wholesale
destruction... There will be something about that in the "A
Thousand Years of Hroft", yeah. In fact, the begging of
"A Thousand Years of Hroft" is the Battle of Borgild
itself / Nick Perumov, November 2001.
From the Webmasters:
On June 14, 2001 we held a poll as to "Which book should
Nick Perumov write?". All unwritten projects participated
in the poll. Nick promised to write the one than won the popular
vote.
Slave of the Unnamable
"This book shall not be written. I have totally lost
interest in it. Truth to be told, the loss of the last shred of
interest happened exactly in that moment when I've told the
story to the public. :)" \ Nick Perumov.
The Plot:
The last three books of the series told us about the Northern,
Eastern and Western Hierward. We missed the Southern and so it
is there, where the plot of the novel took place. A king of some
unknown kingdom is dying. He used to hold the country and his
vassals with an iron first, but his heir, is a soft and kind man,
not really suitable for governing. He has a younger brother and
a sister. The sister is his total opposite, a strong person, and
the younger brother is merely a kid. Well, leaving the counrt
intrigue in peace, shall we say that the sister is planning a
coup d'etat and successfuly executes it. Having, of course,
delved into some supernatural forces. The kingdom is being torn
by the war and the rightful king, the elder son, has to make a
terrible decision. He is not a really warlike person, very meek
in fact, he has to go against his family, against his subjects,
against his own people. As you might remember, Suvorov has
refused to lead his troops to St.-Petersburg, having said that
he shall not spill the blood of his own people. And so, our hero,
has been left alone and without allies, who always wanted a
"strong hand" and a war, since "war feeds war".
So, in the end, this hero of ours, the leder son, is asking the
dwarves for help. They say: "Allright, we'll help you,
since terrible magics have been done and we cannot stand aside.
But promise us that if we win, you shall fulfil our singe
request".
The dwarves go to battle, crush the rebels under the capital's
walls, the sister and the younger brother of the rightful king
are captured. After the victory, the dwarf king reminds our hero
of his promise and demands the king's sister and brother. "Why?"
- asks the king. "They must answer for what they have done,
to purge the world of the evil they have created, we shall put
them to death and sacrifice them underground", - answeres
the dwarf. What is this poor man to do? He has a kind and soft
heart, and he cannot, despite all his promises, give his
relatives so that they shall die. But an oath is an oath, so he
does it. But as soon as he gives them over, he asks one wizard
to free the hostages. So it happens. The oath is broken, blood
is spilled. But the wizard who freed them, does not give them
over to the king. He will personaly sacrifice them to gain some
kind of a power which them have freed. So that is when all
things that gave the title to the book happen. In total despair,
having no other hope, our hero sacrifices himself and sells
himself to the Unnamable. This is worse than selling your soul
to the devil. Devil takes the souls to torment them, but does
not destroy them. "The Slave of the Unnamable" means
that you know absolutely nothing. This is something done only in
total despair, worse than a suicide, the last barrier after
which there is nothing. This book was supposed to be the jumping
ground to many other of my ideas, where I talk about what is the
Unnamable, and try to understand this inhuman mind in it's
dealings with the human world.
To be the slave of the Unnamable is to serve an unknown and
incomprehensible force. When you don't understand what is it
that is wanted of you. You are used not even as an instrument,
but as something beyond the human understanding and human
knowledge. This king was supposed to become one of the
characters of "DSWS", the one who speaks to Fess in
the stone dolmen, offering his help and cooperaton. This,
unfortunately, did not happen.
The second part of the book was supposed to talk about how this
king tried to buy his freedom, how this was achieved with a
price of the destruction of worlds. For himself, he has already
decided that if he is able to gain freedom, and knowing all
these secrets, he shall end his existance. This is quite a
gloomy book. A tragic end, where the main hero dies, having
fulfilled his duty. But it was left unwritten. Key episodes were
done, there are several sketches, but no text itself. I left it
to the public judgement to decide whether it was worth making or
not.
White Blood of the Sunrise
Sequel, or rather an ending, of The Land without Joy. It tells
us about the wanderings of Gorjelin. There are several drafts
and plans, but the book itself shall not be written. \ Nick
Perumov.
The Twilight of the Gods, part
2
The Twilight of the Gods, part 2 (a working title) is perhaps
the most importand book which I will be writing in the next
several years. It is the conclusion of the whole cycle of the
Order Universe, which I began ten years ago with "The
Twilight of the Gods". The book is about unbinding of all
knots which I've tied in other books. All important characters
from the "Chronicles of Hierward" shall make an
appearance.(at least those who lived to see it, according to
their lifespan). We'll see Hedin and Hagen, Rakot and Sigrlynn,
Gorjelin and Eltara, Trogwar and Nallika, Oessy, Slayer and
Rejuvenator, the New Mages, the Old Hroft, the Young Gods, and
almost everyone else, who, how shall I put it, "made a
difference". This shall be the end of the stories about the
Order Universe. There shall be no sequels. So don't be surprised
if the work shall take a lot of time and effort from me. Don't
expect it any earlier that 2003.
Technomagic

a mighty gift becomes powereless against the terrible beasts,
created by the magic of the Serpent Hill. And the code of honor
of the chieftan of the Tverdislav clan compels his to go and
find the roots of evil that demands new sacrifices from his kin.
Enemy unknown
Fate has separater the Tverdislav chieftan and the head witch
Jeyana The Furious. Alas! If only they are together, and who can
tell how everything would have turned out. For before their

And now they must go alone to find the one who has began this
terrible experiment on their home planet, the one who has
brought so much evil to their kin. And they shall not rest for
as long as the ENEMY is UNKNOWN.
Zone of Mages
The third book of the Technomagic series. It was written, then
corrected several times. Due to several reasons, it never
reached the presses. The main one being that the author is not
sattisfied with the book.
Here is Nick's answer to the question whether it will get
published:
"Hardly. For a long time I was thinking about rewriting
"Zone of Mages", but now I understand that I don't
have and strenght to do it."
The Plot: 15 years have passed since the events of "Enemy
Unknown". The protagonist is now Isaiah Ginzburg...
Chronicles of the
Breaking
Diamond Sword, Wooden Sword
For several centuries, the Empire of Men, that has defeated
dwarves, elves, orcs and the Danu, has been kept strong with
blood and fear. The base of the throne are the even Magical
Orders that hold unlimited power over the souls and fates of

of vengeance is nearing, the day of the beginging of the great
battle. For in the deep of the Drung Forest has awoken the holy
sword Immelstorun and in the secret caves of the Mountain People
is shining his diamond "brother" Dragnir.
The first book of the series that takes place in the world of
Melyen. A lot of magical powers, people and lone heroes do
battle to possess the two magic swords. The main character of
the series, Fess is playing his own game, but unexpectedly he
finds himself in the center of the struggle for the Diamond and
Wooden Swords.
The Keeper of the Swords:
Birth of the Mage
After the deadly battle of the Diamond and the Wooden Swords,
Fess, a native of the Wizard's Valley, and a councilor to the
Emperor of the Melyen Empire, finds himself thrown out of his
world, and struck into Evial, one of the worlds of the Order.
Fess has to begin anew. His memory is distorted, his magical
abilities are weaken by unknown forces. But time is running: the
prophecies foretell a swift and terrible demise to the new home
of the mage. But unbenownst to Fell or anyone else in Evial,
that the destruction of this world was sealed by those who were
supposed to save world, battle wizard Klara Hummel and her
companions, who have lost their way on the webby paths of the
Disreality. Having lost his memory, Fess, gets into the Magical
Academy, where he starts learning Necromancy, aquiring new goals
and new enemies.
Wanderings of the Mage
A hard path, glazed with the blood of friend and foe alike, with
the tears of despair and sorrow, will lead the Keeper of the
Diamond and Wooden Swords, mage and necromancer Fess to Narn,
the abode of the Dark Elves. But the dwellers of the magical
forest deny him a safe haven, having foreseen the dark wizzard's
future as an apostle of Darkness, who is fated to bring
destruction to Evial. There is only one way to find out if the
terrible prophecy is true. And Fess accepts it and moves on,
with the Holy Inquisition hot on his trail and a glimmer of hope
in his soul.
The Holy Inquisition follows Fess, a hedge witch creates a spell
that is denied even to the highest of the Mages, a Necromancer's
word is broken thrice. And only the slowly returning memory
helps Fess avoid the tragic conclusion.
Solitude of the Mage
Led by the ancient prophecy, Fess is again wandering the roads
of the mysterious Evial, loosing friends and fighting enemies.
Inexorable fate leads him right into the mouth of the great
battle that can destroy the world. Terrible trials await the
mage, one of which is the torture by solitude.
War of the Mage
A terrible war is breaking out in which the forces of Darkness
and forces of the Light ride against Fess at the same time.
Under the walls of the Black Tower, father-executor Etlau brings
thousands of his soldiers, the death of which would serve as the
last drop on the scales of Good and Evil and allow the Destroyer
to be reborn. But action takes a different direction as Fess
breaks out of the Tower, unwilling to play the role in the game
bestowed on him by the Western Darkness, paying the unforeseen
price. Where will the road lead him now? Who will stand with
side to side with him in the name of the salvation of Evial and
the whole of Order.

two powerful mages come face to face...
In this novel we shall not meet the reader's favourite, Fess,
but instead we meet with Leit - a girl that walks a dangerous
and cruel path of vengeance. Having discovered her magical gift,
and mastering the arts of battle, she sets out to find the Enemy,
her own father, the dreadful Necromancer
To Retrieve the Staff
A novelette published in the book "Necromancer's Daughter"
The Elven Guard (Ploughsare and
Furrow)
"The Elven Guard" is a short story from the world of
Evial. It's plot occurs on the border of the Enchanted Forest
and in the elven forest itself, approximately at the same time
with the action in "Necromancer's Daughter" and "To
Retrieve the Staff". It is currently being edited and will
probably be a part of the Collected Edition.
I, The Vseslav
An Occurance near Kubinka
I won't be an exaggeration to say the "An Occurance near
Kubinka" is a very important short-story, or should I say,
a short novel, and it plays a special role in my life. This text
has long been lieing in the drawers, and I now I have diced to
present a short excerpt from it to the public judgement. It is
in essense a totally new style for me, an alloy of documenrary
and fiction, and it needs a thorough assesment and discussion. I
will be thankful for any type of constructive opinion.
Nick Perumov
The Russian Sword
A short story that opens up the series about Vseslav of Polotsk.
It was published in magazines, and will be published as a part
of a book when the rest of the short-stories from this series
are written.
It is the only work of Nick Perumov that can be freely
circulated around the Net with his full consent and approval.
To Evaporate Iron from Blood
Published in the magazine "Imperia", Kiev, in 1997.
Here is what Nick tells us about the short-story.
I have also rewritten "To Evaporate Iron from the Blood".
It was quite a sad and gloomy story which I have written in
1997, in Dallas when I have first met with the power that
opposes us and having understood what soulless and dreadful
entity it is. It was then when I have written this very bitter
story. I do not want to say that I have in some way or another
foreseen what has happened, but Yugoslavia has shown us that it
is not some kind of fiction or a fable, and it could one day
become a very terrible reality. To the old version I have added
the so-called "Leningrad chapters". The Bundeswehr
parade on the Nevsky, four rows of Leopard II tanks riding
through the silent crowd on both sides of the street. A very
grave story. The re-edited ending was more "bright",
that the older one.
September 24, 2000.
The second short story was "To Evaporate Iron from Blood".
I have had several rebukes for it, with people telling me it was
too much of a fiction. Half a year later, after I've written it
and published it on the Net, began the Serbian War, operation
for control of Kosovo. So here you have it, the story was too
much of a fiction. It was impossible here... I was told: "How
can you write that, this is nonsense, gibberish? Why do you
write about things that are inherrently impossible and unreal,
why do you force all this gloom?"
Having lived in America, I can say that "To Evaporate Iron
from Blood" is my feeling of revalation about what kind of
power we have met. The power that is not really bestial, because
even a beast posseses a mind. This is like a soulless rolling
avalanche. It is neither Good, nor Evil. It just rolls underhill,
and the hill is very long. But woe to he who meets it. Living in
Dallas, I have understood tha the american society just doesn't
get it, and what they are doing is a total anarchy. These were
the people that simply don't understand what real war is and
what real freedom is.

An Elf from the Ends of the
World
A short-story from the "I, the Vselav" series. It will
be written, and there are already plans and drafts.
NP: OK, here's the situation with "Vseslav". I'm
working on the main story, "An Occurance near Kubinka".
"To Evaporate Iron from Blood", "The Russian
Sword", "Vseslav's Hound" are rewritten and ready.
There will also be "An Elf from the Ends of the World"
and "Warriors' Outpost". But these are short-stories,
I sort of "know" them, but just need to sit down and
write them.

Warriors' Outpost
A short-story from the "I, the Vselav" series. It will
be written, and there are already plans and drafts.
NP: OK, here's the situation with "vseslav". I'm
working on the main story, "An Occurance near Kubinka".
"To Evaporate Iron from Blood", "The Russian
Sword", "Vseslav's Hound" are rewritten and ready.

Vseslav's Hound
Another short-tory from the "I, The Vseslav" series. I
can say that conceptually it is written, but not proof-read and
not ready for the publishing.
Empire Above All
Scull on the Sleeve
A new novel by Nick Perumov, a science fiction thriller, written
in the best traditions of the genre. The main character is
Ruslan Fateyev, resident of the planet New Crimea, and an ideal
soldier for the war with the Aliens, terrible and mysterious
monsters that nobody can stop. But that would come later, and
for now the uniform of the imperial trooper, that so painfully
reminds us of the Wehrmacht uniforms from World War II, hangs on
Ruslan's shoulders as a brand of a traitor who has forsaken his
home and joined the ranks of the invaders.
Scull in the Skies
Sequel to "Scull on the Sleece". Being written.
Publishing date currently unknown.

Cannons astern - fire!
Alternative historical novel about the first decade of the XX
century, Russo-Japanese War and Admiral Kolchak. Will be written
shortly. Work on it being currently done.
Here is what Nick says:
"Cannons astern - fire!" will be a pure social science
fiction novel devoid of any magic and sorcery. The protagonist
will be Admiral Kolchak, the place - Port Arthur. This is what
is currently planned. It is an alternative history. I don't like
direct social science fiction since I don't really recognize its
significance for me.

Trial
Currently Nick is not planning to publish this novel.
From the author
This is a totally atypical story for me, if you can say so. It
was written "on the orders" from Andrei Chertkov,
editor-in-chief of the publisher "Terra Fantastica"
and was planned for the second edition of "Time of Students"
collection. It begins right after the end of "Hard to be a
God", which is the best (in my opinion!) book by the
Strugatski Brothers. Of course, the jibbing fans will
immediately accuse me (again!) of "distortions". So I
say it now. I am perfectly aware of the fact that in the
original novel NOTHING suggests that Anton and Anka had an
affair. This is my conjecture. Anyone who thinks it is
impossible, can cast the first stone. Those who like to accuse
me of lies, I refer you for any explanations (if such desire
arises) directly to Andrei Chertkov (www.tf.ru). The english
phrases in the begging of the chapeter are taken from the book:
Arkadi and Boris Strugatski "Hard to be a God",
translated by Wendayne Ackerman. DAW Books, NY, 1974.
